How we write and test our hacks

Every list on Life Hacks List starts with a question people really ask, such as how to pack for a long train trip or how to stop a fridge from smelling. We answer it with hacks we can explain and repeat.

How a hack makes the list

  1. We collect ideas from our own homes and trips and from readers.
  2. We try them, note what works and where it fails, and drop anything unsafe.
  3. We write each hack in a few plain lines: what to do, with what, and why it works.

Writing tools and photos

We use writing software to help organise notes and first drafts, and a person rewrites and checks every hack before it is published. The photos on our pages are illustrations made with image software to show the idea clearly; they are not photos of a specific home.

Keeping lists fresh

Each page shows when it was last updated. When readers tell us a hack did not work, we test it again and add a note or remove it.
