Do you ever feel like your rapping just isn’t connecting with people? Or that you’re missing out on telling a great story because your lyrics aren’t “riding the beat?” If so, then this article is for you. You see, in order to really give your audience something to listen to, you need to have a great beat as well as good structure.
In other words: if your rapping without a beat, then your flow will lack rhythm, and you’ll just be making it up as you go along. But if you have a great track with an uninspired structure, then it can lead listeners to wonder why they’re hearing the same thing over and over again. The answer is: boring rap! So here are ways that using proper structure can help rock the rap game – both lyrically and visually -:
Timing is everything
When it comes to timing, there are a few factors that you can work on to increase the impact of your beats to rap to composed lyrics. So while you may not be able to change the fact that you were born on June 28, 1999, you can definitely adjust the timing of your verses to reflect that! For example, if you’re a New York rapper trying to explain about your wild nightlife, you might want to leave your metaphors and similes until later in the song. Doing so will allow your listeners to savor the content without feeling rushed.
Be specific with your structure
If you’re just starting out in the game, then it’s important to remember that the structure of your rap is just as important as the music itself. So although you may not know how to properly structure a song yet, don’t worry: over time, your structure will get better and better as you gain experience on the mic.
For example, if you’re just starting out with rapping and you want to incorporate a sample into your track, then you should generally be very limited in the type of structure that you use. There are a lot of factors that go into building a successful online presence, and one of them is good, solid structure. However, if you’ve been in the game for a while and you know how to properly use samples in your mix, then feel free to use whatever you want
Show, don’t just tell
One of the best things about rap is that you get to show your audience what you’re capable of because that’s exactly what you do in every track you rap on. So instead of just telling your audience what happened in the past, or what you’re going to do next, try showing your listeners what you’ve already achieved.
This not only makes your audience feel good because they know you’re positive and positive alone, but it also gives you the opportunity to brag about yourself a little bit. So instead of just saying “I’m the best,” try saying “I’ve won a million awards.” Or “I’ve been to ten countries.”
